Resveratrol Prostate Cancer information
RESVERATROL is the much spoken about nutritional supplements that has all the scientists trying to figure out how this anti-oxidant reacts to the various diseases that can occur within the human body. Resveratrol is produced from the skin of red grapes and Japanese knotweed root. It is being spoken about as the most promising nutritional discovery in modern times and it is being attributed to a host of beneficial health effects. For this reason we compiled this site to look at the disease of Prostate Cancer and give some info on why resveratrol is being linked as a possible treatment to reducing the risk of prostate cancer
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer happens when cells in the prostate gland change and start to grow quickly. These cancer cells can affect how the prostate works normally. Prostate cancer generally occurs in older men. It is often a slow growing cancer and problems may not occur for many years.
How common is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, after skin cancer. The Stats suggest that prostate cancer can relate to approx 1 in 8 men during their lifetime. Although there are many men with this disease, most men do not die from it.
Grading prostate cancer
Grading refers to the appearance of the cancer cells under the microscope.
Low-grade tumours are grade 2–4. They usually grow slowly and are less likely to spread.
A score of 5–7 is a moderate grade.
High-grade tumours are grade 8–10. They tend to grow more quickly and are more likely to spread.
Staging of prostate cancer
The stage of a cancer describes its size and if it has spread to other parts of your body. By knowing the stage and the grade of the cancer, it helps your doctors to decide the best treatment for you. There are a few different staging systems for prostate cancer, but the following one is used most often. Prostate cancer is generally divided into four stages, depending on the tumour size:
If the tumour is within the prostate, this is known as T1 and T2.
If the tumour has spread beyond the prostate, it is known as T3 and T4.
If the cancer has spread to other parts of your body, this is known as secondary or metastatic prostate cancer.
Prostate Cancer, early warning signs
Cancers that are found within the prostate gland only are known as early prostate cancer. Men with early prostate cancer are unlikely to have any symptoms at all. Prostate cancers usually only cause symptoms when they are large enough to disturb your bladder or press on the tube that drains urine. For that reason, the symptoms of prostate cancer, when they appear, are like the symptoms of an enlarged prostate
The symptoms of prostate cancer include:
Passing urine more often, especially at night
Pain or difficulty when passing urine
Trouble starting or stopping the flow of urine
The feeling of not having emptied your bladder
Frequent pain in your lower back, hips or upper thighs
Trouble having or keeping an erection
Blood in your urine or sperm (very rare)
If you have any of the above symptoms, get them checked out by your doctor. But remember that most enlarged prostate glands are not cancer and can be easily treated.
Resveratrol and Prostate Cancer
There is various research taking place on the effects of resveratrol in treating prostate cancer .Such research has taken place in the University of Rochester. According to Paul Okunieff, who is the chief of radiation oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Centre, "Antioxidant research is very active and very seductive right now and the challenge lies in finding the right concentration and how it works inside the cell. Resveratrol seems to have a therapeutic gain by making tumor cells more sensitive to radiation and making normal tissue less sensitive."
Okunieff began studying resveratrol as a tumor sensitizer, which is when the link to the mitochondria was uncovered. Researchers divided pancreatic cancer cells into two groups: cells treated without resveratrol then iodized, and ones treated with resveratrol at a relatively high dose of 50mg per ml before being iodized. The study found that resveratrol reduced the function of proteins in the pancreatic cancer cell membranes responsible for pumping chemotherapy out of the cell, therefore making them more sensitive to the treatment. The antioxidant also triggered the production of reactive oxygen species, causing apoptosis, and depolarized the mitochondrial membranes, indicating a decrease in the cell's potential to function. The researchers said the discovery is important because the mitochondria contains its own DNA and can continuously supply the cell with energy when functioning fully. Stopping the energy flow can therefore help stop cancer.
At the University of Alabama in Birmingham, researchers there conducted a study in which mice that were fed resveratrol showed an 87% less likely possibility of developing prostate cancer compared with mice not fed with it, indicating beneficial links between taking resveratrol and preventing prostate cancer.
Much research in this subject in still ongoing, so we would suggest that you continue to examine research data that becomes available and we will update our information as more becomes available.
How might you reduce the possibility of occurrence?
It is much better to avoid any form of cancer than to try and treat it after it has appeared. Prostate cancer, however, is usually a slow growing form of cancer which responds well to treatment. The first step in prostate cancer prevention is to improve your general health. Weight should be within the normal range for your height. If you are very overweight, see your doctor for advice and eat a healthy diet which is low in fatty or sugary foods. This combined with daily exercise such as walking and swimming should help.
Drink lots of water - water is vital for health. It prevents hunger and flushes toxins from the body. Six to eight glasses a day is ideal and tea and coffee doesn't count towards this. Reduce your alcohol intake. There's nothing wrong with the odd drink, just don't make it a daily habit.
Lycopene which is found mainly in tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato pasta is an antioxidant which has a proven beneficial effect on prostate health. Studies have shown that men who consume large doses of lycopene have a much lower incidence of prostate cancer.
Isoflavones found in soy beans and soya milk has an effect on the body's hormones. It can counter excess testosterone which can lead to prostate cancer.
Beta-carotene found in carrots and other brightly coloured vegetables can stimulate T-helper cells which prevent the development of cancer.
Selenium is an extremely important micro nutrient which is only needed in tiny amounts. Selenium can be found in certain foods, but the soils in many areas in the world are deficient in this mineral and the food cannot absorb this mineral. Supplements are beneficial is this case.
A person's mental disposition which could result in someone having strong emotions such as anger, stress and depression can have a damaging effect on the immune system and can lead to diseases such as cancer or heart problems.
So good advice to help in avoiding such problems seems to suggest that a relaxed state of mind can help as well as good diet and a positive mindset seems to all help to prevent such diseases. General stay healthy common rules include
Maintaining a healthyweight
Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables per day.
Eating fish and poultry in one's diet, try to limit red meat intake to 2 times a week.
Avoid fatty foods and try to decrease fat intake.
Approx one in three cancer cases diagnosed could be prevented and the number of cancer deaths could be reduced greatly by leading a healthier life.
Treatment for Prostate Cancer
Surgery for prostate cancer is usually a total prostatectomy. It is also known as a radical prostatectomy. This is where the prostate is fully removed from the body. This operation is done when the cancer is found within the prostate gland only. This is because the entire tumour can be removed and the cancer cured.
The operation can be done by open surgery or keyhole surgery or by using a robot. For open surgery, a cut in your abdomen or near your anus is made. The treatment of prostate cancer can vary. It depends on the stage, grade and size of the tumour, the PSA (prostate-specific-antigen) level, your age, general health, lifestyle, and likely side-effects of treatment.
Some ways to treat prostate cancer include:
Active surveillance/watchful waiting
Some early stage prostate cancers may be very slow growing. For this reason, some patients and specialists might decide to wait and see if the cancer is growing before starting any treatment. It may be an option if the cancer is not causing any symptoms and is small and only found in one place in the prostate. Some men choose watchful waiting because they feel the side-effects of strong treatments outweigh the benefits. Active surveillance involves regular check-ups with PSA tests and rectal exams and sometimes biopsies. If you start to have symptoms or if your PSA begins to rise, you can think about other treatments.
External beam radiotherapy
This is a treatment where high-energy X-rays are aimed at a cancer to cure or control it. The X-rays come from a machine called a linear accelerator. This is known as external beam radiotherapy. In early prostate cancer, the radiotherapy is aimed at the tumour in the prostate gland. The aim is to destroy the cancer cells, while doing as little harm as possible to normal cells. This is known as radical radiotherapy.
Brachytherapy
Sometimes radiotherapy for prostate cancer is given from inside your body. This is called brachytherapy which is a form of radiation treatment for cancer that is still within the prostate gland. Small radioactive seeds or beads are put into the tumour under general anaesthetic. This is so that radiation can be released slowly over a period of time. The seeds are not removed but the radiation gradually wears out and there is no risk of it affecting other people. Depending on the size of the tumour, brachytherapy may be given with external radiotherapy.
Cancer of the prostate depends on the male hormone testosterone for its growth. By reducing the amount of testosterone in your body, the growth of cancer cells can be slowed down or stopped. It can shrink the tumour and urinary symptoms can often disappear fully.
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to cure or control cancer. Chemotherapy may be used if your cancer has spread beyond the prostate and is no longer controlled by hormone therapy. In some cases, chemotherapy will improve your quality of life with better control of your symptoms.
The three ways that cancer spreads in the body are:
1. Through tissue. Cancer invades the surrounding normal tissue.
2. Through the lymph system. Cancer invades the lymph system and travels through the lymph vessels to other places in the body.
3. Through the blood. Cancer invades the veins and capillaries and travels through the blood to other places in the body.
